The Mayan Calendar ends on December 21, 2012. The Mayans are well known for having predicted the end of their own civilization, and indeed this did happen when the Spanish invaded South America and killed them off either by slaughter, imprisonment or the introduction of disease. So, why are many scientists, astrologers and prophets now turning their attention to the second Mayan prediction -- the end of civilization in the year 2012. Just what has prompted the Mayans to make this dire prediction?
While I do not believe (as some do) that the world will end on December 21, 2012, I do believe it will be a much different world in which we live, precipitated by unprecedented, shocking and exceptional world events. What will those events be? Lets look at the players for some important clues.
First up, Saturn, the planet of restriction, self-discipline, lessons, duties, challenges and limitations will be in the sign of Scorpio in 2012. Saturn in Scorpio wants to understand what makes people tick and studies people to further its awareness. Serious, resourceful, insightful, Scorpio in Saturn probes deep beneath the surface. It knows that still waters run deep and it wants to penetrate mystery and emotion to acquire power. It wants to put people in boxes, so its lesson is to teach us the use of power wisely and appropriately.
Uranus will actually enter the sign of Aries on March 13, 2011. The last time Uranus transited Aries was in 1927-1935, which we all know as the great depression and beginning of the events that eventually led up to World War II. Uranus rules invention, originality, sudden or unexpected change, revolution, as well as breakthroughs and radical thinking (think Hitler). It both questions and challenges authority, and transcends business-as-usual social and cultural ideas to arrive at new solutions. Uranus insists on freedom. It is the planet of intuition and sixth sense, the ruler of astrologers and inventors and is closely associated with electricity, technology and electronics. It rules explosions, accidents, eccentricity, outer space.Uranus in Aries will demand a break from the conventional and take off in new, unexplored directions for both social reform and new breakthroughs in science. These breakthroughs will most likely have an “urgent” feel to them … we are destroying our planet and we MUST find new resources, either underwater or “out there” in the unexplored realms of the Universe. The Uranus-in-Aries generation will have a strong desire to do what it wants to do. Bound and determined to stick to their guns, much of their lives may be torn apart (as was the last Aries-in-Uranus generation: 1927-1935) whose lives were heavily torn apart by World War II and Korean War. Uranus in Aries liberates impetuously. And what sign could be more impetuous and unstoppable than impatient, firey, aggressive Aries? Want a good fight? Be careful what you wish for with this gas-to-flame planetary position.
Neptune will enter Pisces, its own sign. The last time Neptune was in Pisces was 1847-1862 -- the time of the French Revolution. Neptune represents all matters related to water and liquids, music and movies, glamour, dreams and illusion. It also rules spirituality, ideals, hunches, and thing we know intuitively. Neptune is the planet of the mystical, of fog, and flattery and fragrance, of illusion and addiction; of hypnosis and hypochondria; of disease and famine. It is the planet of dissolution. It is ooey and gooey and wrapped in mystery. Whatever it touches dissolves, pollutes, poisons and destroys. Pisces rules water: the ocean, the water we drink; and it rules oil, gasoline, and natural resources.
Pluto is in Capricorn. The last time Pluto entered Capricorn was the time of the American Revolution from 1762-1777. Pluto (the planet of irreversible transformative change) is the ruler of the underworld. It is naturally associated with death, but death is also renewal and transformation. Sometimes it takes an enormous setback or challenge to force us onto a new course – remember your history here -- and remember, too, that the same force can be either creative or destructive, like atomic energy. It all depends on how that energy gets used.
The last time Pluto was in Capricorn, in the 1770's, the hot spot of the day was the price of tea and taxes which led to the revolution against the British and ultimately in the birth of the United States. Could we now be heading toward another revolution, this time over the price of oil and gas and the average-Joe losing his home due to shady mortgage deals? As Pluto goes retrograde I am looking for signs of the next revolution. Where will it take place? In our own neighborhoods as millions are watching the “American Dream” disappear as their homes go on the auction blocks; in the big oil companies where summons before Congress were met with sarcasm, a shrug of the shoulders and deliberate lies; on Wall Street where CEO's were "rewarded" for their incompetence with over $18 Billion in bonuses after receiving billions in bail-out money; in the poverty stricken streets of Cyclone-ravaged Myanmar where the junta government continues to prevent its desperate citizens from receiving urgent foreign aid? How about you? Where is your own personal revolution going to take place? Look at the your natal chart. The house that Pluto now occupies is where you will feed the need to “revolt” and “rebel”.
In the 1960's there was a revolution too, against the “establishment”. Currently, we have Saturn retrograde in Virgo and Pluto retrograde in Capricorn, Neptune in Aquarius and Uranus in Pisces. In the 1960's Pluto was in Virgo and Saturn was in Capricorn – see the parallels? The baby boomers caused a revolution first against the establishment; then over civil rights, the Vietnam War, social injustice, The Bomb, and the environment. Peace, Love and Rock ‘N Roll where themes of the day.
So what is our destiny? I don’t know. But one thing is for sure, and that is that history always repeats itself and we all must live by the rules of karma -- what goes around comes around. Are you listening Wall Street CEOs? Karma. Gotta love it.
